The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles were looking to sweep the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars in south sub region play on Feb. 1 in Scottsbluff, Neb., but the Cougars put together a strong second half and overcame a 10-point deficit to get an 85-78 victory.
The Golden Eagles came from a 97-67 victory against Eastern Wyoming College last Wednesday and hoped to carry that over to Saturday’s game. The Golden Eagles got off to a great start and had a lead as large as 11 in the game and were up 10 at the half (43-33). The Golden Eagles shot the ball well in the first half and held the Cougars to 41.2 percent from the field, 20 percent from the three-point line and 60 percent from the free-throw line in the first half.
In the second half, the tides began to turn as the Cougars went on a 19-2 run in the second half. They pulled down 24 offensive rebounds and got 18 points from second-chance opportunities. The Golden Eagles forced the Cougars into 21 turnovers, but in the end it was not enough.
The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 15-10 on the year and 6-6 in the south sub region. Up next, the Golden Eagles return home for a matchup with Trinidad State Junior College on Feb. 11. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
