Men’s soccer team earns No. 1 seed for regionals

LCCC secures the title by finishing regular season with two wins.

The Laramie County Community College men’s soccer team finished up the regular season with two road matches and clinched the top seed for the Region IX tournament.

The first match was on Oct. 18 in Sheridan, Wyo., where the Golden Eagles defeated the Sheridan College Generals 2-0. LCCC held the Generals to only three shots for the entire game.

Freshman Domey Espinoza got things started in the 16th minute when he converted on a pass from sophomore Jesse Molina. The Golden Eagles put up 13 shots and had 11 corner kicks but only had a single goal to show for it at the end of the first half.

The Golden Eagles continued to fire away after intermission and got their second goal in the 74th minute when freshman Dennis Vivar-Diaz assisted freshman Willy Salamanca into a one-on-one breakaway. Espinoza and Salamanca now have six goals apiece on the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Ainsworth only had to make one save and was credited with the shutout.

Golden Eagles shut out Northwest College
LCCC looked to secure the No. 1 seed for the Region IX tournament and did so with a 4-0 victory over Northwest College on Oct. 19 in Powell, Wyo.

The Golden Eagles got on the board early as sophomore Jesse Molina got a goal off an assist from freshman Dennis Vivar-Diaz in the 15th minute. Vivar-Diaz also was involved in the second goal, but this time he did the scoring by following up on a rebound in the 23rd minute. Sophomore Dimitri Sofias made it 3-0 in the 36th minute when he followed up on his own free kick to record his fourth goal of the year.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles got their fourth and final goal in the 48th minute from a free kick by freshman Cesar Vargas, who found the head of freshman Brandon Flores. Flores now leads the team with seven goals on the year. Sophomore Daniel Ainsworth only had to make two saves and is credited with the shutout.

The Golden Eagles improve to 13-5-1 on the year and 12-2 in Region IX. The Golden Eagles have earned the No.1 seed and will face Western Nebraska Community College in the opening round of the Region IX tournament, which starts Oct. 25 in La Junta, Colo.
