Wingspan earns national recognition for headline writing

College newspaper takes third place in the nation.

The American Copy Editors Society’s (ACES) annual headline writing contest awarded Laramie County Community College’s student newspaper, Wingspan, with third place in the nation.

The staff competed with four-year institutions from around the country. First place went to the University of North Carolina and second place to Baylor University.

According to the announcement made March 20 at the ACES 18th annual national conference in Las Vegas, “ACES’ premier contest aims to reward good headline writing in newspapers, non-newspaper publications, websites and now even Twitter.”

The Wingspan staff entered work published during 2013, and three headlines were particularly noted by the judges:
  • “Catch a Neighbor by the Tow” brightly conjures up the singsong ‘eenie meenie’ rhyme (story about a local towing company)
  • “Error…Reboot” is smile inducing and apropos for our computer-dominated everything (editorial about online schedules)
  • “’Hansel and Gretel’” takes candy from stranger” shows it’s no wonder these kids got into trouble—they never listened to their parents (movie review of “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”)
