College presents “Climbing Everest”

Mark Jenkins, who successfully scaled the mountain last year, will speak at 7 p.m. Jan. 29.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first American to reach the top of Mount Everest, and an upcoming event at Laramie County Community College examines the quest to scale the iconic mountain.
Mark Jenkins, acclaimed author and alpinist, presents “Climbing Everest: The Myths, The Madness and the Macabre” in a free event open to the entire community. The event takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at LCCC, Arp Room 128.

Jenkins, who successfully scaled the mountain last year, is also a field staff writer for National Geographic and writer-in-residence at the University of Wyoming.

Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, presents challenge and controversy as more and more people attempt to reach its summit. Jenkins explores Everest’s past and present and how the meaning of climbing the mountain has evolved dramatically since the first attempt in 1922.

This presentation is co-sponsored by LCCC’s International Studies Program, the UW Global and Area Studies Program and UW’s Outreach School.
