Season's Musical Finale to Bring Audience to Their Feet

Photo of musicians playing during a concert on stageCHEYENNE, Wyoming – Two concerts celebrating music that inspires dance are coming to Laramie County Community College in May for the season’s final performances.

“With a Dance in Our Step” features two unique and electrifying concerts. The first, at 2 p.m. May 4, will feature the Wind Symphony and Chamber Orchestra. The Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Cantorei, Collegiate Choir, and Cheyenne Brass Band will perform in the second concert at 7 p.m. on May 5. Both performances, free and open to the public, will be held in the Surbrugg/Prentice Auditorium.

The Orchestra will deliver five dance pieces during the May 4 performance, according to ensemble conductor John Fritz. The program includes “hidden gems” like “Rhythm Dances” and “Grande Polka,” and popular numbers culminating with “The Lord of the Dance.” Fritz highlights the challenging nature of the music and commends the Orchestra’s excellent performance.

The Wind Symphony will open with Ron Nelson’s “Courtly Airs and Dances,” a tribute to the composer. This will be followed by vibrant works such as “Rag” from “American Dances” by Robert W. Smith, and “Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance, described as a "primitive-sounding dance ritual" by Dr. Frank Cook, LCCC music instructor.

On May 5, the Cheyenne Brass Band will start with compositions by Malcolm Arnold and Gustav Holst, ending with “St. Louis Blues.” The Jazz Ensemble promises to energize the audience with pieces like “Tonight, We Tango” and “Boogalues,” featuring a solo by high school student Evan Caldon. They will also debut “Blues by Naughty Sweetie Gives Me” by Logan Vanderlaan.

Collegiate Chorale and Cantorei will perform “Suite Remembrance” by Melissa Dunphy, incorporating baroque dance styles, and lively pieces like “Un Poquito Cantas” and a crowd-pleasing “Footloose.”
