LCCC Speech Team launches, open to all students
CHEYENNE, Wyoming – Laramie County Community College is launching a Speech Team, bringing
competitive speaking back to campus with opportunities to compete at high levels.
Open to students from all academic disciplines, the team provides structured coaching and practice in a supportive, team-based environment, regardless of prior speaking or performance experience. Students will travel to regional and national competitions, representing LCCC alongside other colleges and universities.
The team will compete in a range of events that allow students to explore different forms of oral communication and performance. Competitive categories include public address events, limited preparation speaking and interpretation of literature, including prose, drama and poetry.
Ashley Schulz, an LCCC faculty member, is bringing her experience coaching at the high school level to her position as the college team’s head speech coach. Students interested in joining the Speech Team or learning more are encouraged to contact Schulz directly at ASchulz@lccc.wy.edu.
Supporting a collegiate speech team reflects LCCC’s commitment to giving students opportunities to build skills that carry beyond the classroom, Schulz said.
“Competitive speech teaches students to think critically, speak confidently and advocate for what they believe in,” Schulz said. “Those skills translate to every major, every career and every stage of life.”
Competitions are expected to begin in mid-February. Regular team meetings are planned for 4 p.m. Thursdays in the Fine Arts Building, room 117, on LCCC’s Cheyenne campus.
