LCCC Board of Trustees Approves Transition to Wyoming State College

CHEYENNE, Wyoming – The Laramie County Community College Board of Trustees voted this evening to approve a resolution authorizing the College's transition to a new name Wyoming State College. The action followed public comment during the Board's regular meeting and marks the culmination of more than four years of research, analysis, and stakeholder engagement focused on the institution's awareness, perception, and future growth opportunities.

The Board's decision reflects the College's growth and evolution since its founding in 1968 and recognizes the expanded educational opportunities it now provides to students across Wyoming and the surrounding region. As Wyoming State College, the institution will continue its strong partnership with the Wyoming Community College Commission and remain committed to delivering exceptional, accessible, and workforce-responsive higher education opportunities that meet the needs of Wyoming's students and communities.

"This is an exciting and historic moment for our institution," said Dr. Joe Schaffer, president of Laramie County Community College. "The name Wyoming State College honors everything that has made LCCC successful while creating a clearer understanding of who we are today and the opportunities available to students here. This decision is not about leaving our history behind. It is about celebrating our history and building upon it as we continue transforming lives through inspired learning."

Over the past six decades, the College has expanded significantly beyond its original framework, evolving to offer academic and workforce pathways that serve a wide range of student goals. Today, students can pursue associate degrees, applied bachelor’s degrees, and workforce certifications. The College offers students a comprehensive college experience including transfer pathways, skilled trades training, athletics, residence halls, and comprehensive student support services.

"After careful consideration, extensive research, and valuable public input, the Board concluded that this change positions the College for long-term success while remaining true to its mission," said Jess Ketcham, chairman of the LCCC Board of Trustees. "Wyoming State College better reflects the institution we have become and the opportunities we provide. This decision honors our proud legacy while ensuring future generations recognize the education available through this incredible institution."

College leaders emphasized that the name change will not affect current students, academic programs, financial aid, scholarships, graduation requirements, or the institution's commitment to open access and affordability. The Golden Eagles name and school colors will also remain unchanged.

The transition to Wyoming State College will be implemented thoughtfully over the coming months. Beginning immediately, the College will undertake the necessary operational, regulatory, and branding activities required to support the change. The official transition to the Wyoming State College name will occur on July 1, 2027.
