CHEYENNE, Wyoming – When a coworker collapsed during a routine workday at Meridian Trust Federal Credit Union, Laramie County Community College student Tosha Cox immediately stepped in to help.

Cox, a student in LCCC’s Health Sciences & Wellness Pathway, began administering CPR as coworkers called 911 and cleared space for emergency responders. She continued chest compressions until Cheyenne Fire Rescue firefighters and EMTs arrived.

The patient survived. A deputy fire chief later told staff that the bystander CPR performed before responders arrived was critical to the outcome.

“There wasn’t any hesitation,” said Mariah Robinson, Cox’s supervisor at the credit union. “She got out of her chair and started doing compressions right away.”

Cox works full time at the credit union while completing her degree at LCCC and has prior health care experience, including CPR certification.

“I offered to do it because I’m trained,” said Tosha Cox, an LCCC student in the Health Sciences and Wellness Pathway. “I knew I could help.”

The incident occurred just days before Thanksgiving and left a lasting impression on those who witnessed it, Robinson said.

“You never know who is going to step up when it matters,” Robinson said. “That day made it clear.”

Cox plans to complete her associate degree this spring and continue her education at LCCC.
