The LCCC Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform their “And the Winner Is…” concert at 3 p.m. May 3. Finally, the “Spring Jazz Showcase” is set for 7 p.m. May 6. Both concerts will be in the Surbrugg/Prentice Auditorium on LCCC’s Cheyenne campus, and both are free and open to the public.

Award-winning music will shape the May 3 concert, with the Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble each approaching the theme from a different angle. John Fritz’s Chamber Orchestra program emphasizes recognizable works and award-winning scores, while Dr. Frank Cook’s Wind Ensemble selections focus more on composers who won major honors and also wrote for band.

“The afternoon concert gives audiences music they will recognize alongside pieces they may be hearing for the first time,” Cook said. “The Chamber Orchestra is bringing in several familiar titles, while the Wind Ensemble will show how highly honored composers have also written compelling music for concert band.”

Chamber Orchestra selections include “Fanfare 250,” “Star Trek Through the Years,” theme from “Schindler’s List,” “Jurassic Park Medley” and “Phantom of the Opera.” Wind Ensemble selections include “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue,” “Rhythm Stand,” “Newsreel in Five Shots” and “Lyric for Band.”

A mix of big band energy, jazz standards and featured performers will take center stage in the May 6 jazz concert. The program includes “Step Right Up,” “On Green Dolphin Street,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Monstruo,” “Time After Time,” “Black Orpheus,” “I Won’t Dance” and “Seven Steps to Heaven.” Vocalists featured in the concert are Danielle Beightol, Moss Archiquette, Matthew Cook and Julie Koenig.

Highlights of the evening will include community member John Barrett featured on trumpet and flugelhorn for “On Green Dolphin Street,” Danielle Beightol singing “Cheek to Cheek” and a world premiere by Logan Vanderlaan. “Monstruo” will spotlight graduating bass trombonist Ricky Winters.
