LCCC's student newspaper staff writes its way to another national honor

CHEYENNE, WYO. —  For the third year in a row, the American Copy Editors Society’s annual headline writing contest has awarded Laramie County Community College’s student newspaper, Wingspan, with third place in the nation.

The staff competed with four-year institutions from around the country. First place went to the University of North Carolina and second place to the University of Missouri. LCCC is the only community college ever to win in this competition.

“ACES’ premier contest aims to reward good headline writing in all types of mediums from newspaper to social media,” according to the announcement made March 26 at the ACES 19th annual national conference.

The Wingspan staff entered work published during 2014, and some of the award-winning headlines were:

  •  “Retiree heads for back nine”
  •  “Don’t RAM your head, that hertz—computer help here”
  •  “There’s always room for pie: Students throw, eat pies during homecoming”
  •  “Once bitten, twice shy: Rattlers poison season”

Winner of several regional and national awards, the Wingspan can be found online.
